Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions/answers that we are frequently asked. 1. What are the Hospital hours?

Our hospital is open Monday – Friday 8:00am to 6:00pm and Saturday 8:00am to 12:00pm. The clinic is closed on Sunday. Monday-Friday drop offs as early as 7:30am for your convenience.

2. Do I need to have an appointment?

Yes, patients are seen by appointment. Emergencies will be seen immediately and prioritized to create as little disruption to scheduled appointments as possible.

3. What forms of payment do you accept?

Cash, Check, MasterCard and Visa.

4. Can I make payments?

Payment is expected at the time of service.

5. Can I get an estimate for the services I am considering?

Yes, you may request an estimate at any time and we will gladly provide a treatment plan with estimated expenses for you.

6. At what age can I have my pet spayed or neutered?

Spaying or neutering can be done at approximately 6 months of age. Your pet is given an exam prior to surgery to help determine whether your pet is healthy enough to undergo the surgical procedure. Current vaccinations are required at the time of surgery. Also a pre-anesthetic blood screen is recommended prior to undergoing every anesthesia procedure and surgery in order to minimize the risk of anesthesia to your beloved family member.

7. What is the pre-anesthetic blood screening and why is it necessary?

It tests the organ functions, blood counts and clotting function of your pet. The pre-anesthetic blood screening is done to assure safety during surgery and the ability to heal following surgery.

8. How long do the sutures stay in after my pet’s procedure?

If your pet’s procedure required external sutures or stapling, these are usually removed 10-14 days following the procedure.

9. Is it a good idea to let my pet have at least one litter?

No, there is no advantage to letting your pet have one litter. However there are plenty of advantages to having your pet spayed or neutered. These advantages include decreasing the chances of breast tumors later in life, decreasing the chance of cystic ovaries and uterine infections later in life, decreasing the desire to roam the neighborhood, decreasing the incidence of prostate cancer later in life, and helping prevent spraying, marking and aggression. Spaying and neutering also decreases the surplus of unwanted puppies and kittens. Every year, more than 12 million pets are euthanized because there are not enough homes available.

10. Should my pet be on monthly Heartworm Preventive year round in Texas?

We recommend having all dogs and all outside cats on monthly heartworm prevention year-round as Texas is one of the states with the highest occurrence of heartworm disease.

11. What is a Pet Portal?

A Pet Portal is a free online service offered to clients of Sunset Canyon Veterinary clinic. It is a private, interactive website linked to your pet’s health care records from our clinic. It is designed to help you manage your pet’s health care and learn about health care topics. Your Pet Portal account is completely secure, so you do not need to worry about privacy. We value your privacy and will never share your information.

12. What can my Pet Portal do?

You can view your pet’s records, vaccination reminders and medication history as well as products purchased. Through the Pet Portal, you are able to access our online pharmacy for shipment of medications and products directly to your home. You can communicate with us by e-mail to request medication refills or diet food refills (to be picked up at our office). You can update your account and pet information and inform us if you have a new pet, or if your pet is lost. You can learn about various diseases and vaccinations your pet should have regarding health care issues. You can opt out of these e-mails at any time. You can upload photographs of your pet into the photo gallery and customize it to your liking. Best of all, the Pet Portal is a free on-line service for our clients.

13. How do I sign up for a Pet Portal account?

You must be a current client at Sunset Canyon Veterinary Clinic in order to receive a Pet Portal account and you will need an e-mail address. Please call or email our office with your current email address. Then, from our Website, click on the pet Portal icon (located at the top of our home page) and fill in the requested information. Within approximately 1-2 business days you will receive an e-mail from us letting you know your Pet Portal is active and ready to customize.
